Are Windows Updates really necessary?

Question: Are Windows Updates really necessary? How do I know if they are valid updates?

Answer: Microsoft Windows updates are a necessary and valid service that Microsoft uses to keep its Windows programs up to date and to patch up recently discovered security exploits and virus vulnerabilities. Most of the newer versions of windows have the update service automatic with a small balloon screen popping up when updates are needed or ready to install. In older systems, this can be accomplished by opening Internet Explorer then selecting “tools” and clicking on the Windows Updates tab. This will take you to a website maintained by Microsoft that will check your system settings and download any necessary updates that will then be completed after a reboot. One thing to remember is that these updates do not come in over email, and any email message with an attachment or link claiming to come from Microsoft should be ignored and deleted as a potential virus.
