This is one of those dinners that, despite its humble roots remain a staple of the American dinner repertoire. It is delicious, quick, and best of all easy on the pocketbook. This particular recipe is made from scratch with no pre made seasoning and is really just as fast to make as the pre-made mixes or canned sauces which have all sorts of lovely preservatives and additives not to mention that slightly tinny taste from prolonged shelf time. Try this recipe and you will see that there is nothing like a good Sloppy Joe sandwich.

Amount Measure Ingredients
2.5 lbs Lean ground beef (no more than 15% fat)
16 oz can tomato sauce
16 oz can diced tomatoes
1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke seasoning
1 cup tomato ketchup
1 teaspooon onion powder
1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup sugar
    Salt to taste

To prepare:

Place ground beef in a large preheated skillet and sauté until brown and crumbled well. Add in the garlic and onion powder, and black pepper mixing well. Next, add in the chopped tomatoes and simmer 1-2 minutes. Add in the tomato sauce and liquid smoke seasoning, mix well and add ketchup and sugar. Simmer 5-6 minutes to blend flavors well and adjust salt to taste. Serve hot and open faced over toasted hamburger buns with pickle wedges and a slice of American cheese. Yum!
