Considering the influence of Mexican Californios in the Mother Lode prior to statehood in 1850, it’s only fitting that Tuolumne County Museum was granted the first opportunity in the state to house the Telling Stories of Mexican California Exhibit for almost two months. Visit the museum and learn more about the rich history of the people who established the area we now know as Sonora from April 9th through June 2nd. Hours:Â Tuesday – Saturday 10 am to 4pm Sundays 11 am to 3 pm and open for Sonora Second Saturday in April and May until 7 pm.
The exhibit broadly outlines California’s history leading up to statehood as a backdrop to the factual and fictional stories that emerged after the U.S. takeover. It considers 19th Centruy Mexican American individuals and families who told their stories and looks at some of the early narratives that helped create an enduring California mythos, as well as the stories that were ignored in favor of this new, often exaggerated or fictionalized lore.
