Reed Fire 45% Contained

San Andreas, CA — Cal Fire reports the Reed Fire on the southside of San Andreas is now 45% contained, but has grown from 90 to 120 acres in size. Also, 30 residents remain evacuated.

The CHP now reports Highway 49 is now reopened to traffic. A stretch of the roadway from the old airport to Mountain Ranch Road had been shut down for an hour, and then it was down to one-way traffic control for more than a half an hour.

Nearly 30 homes on Howell Road, Magers Way and the Saddleback Subdivision are threatened.  The flames broke out around 4 pm on the 300 block of George Reed Road near Highway 49.  Firefighters continue to battle the blaze from the ground and air. There are 246 firefighters, 22 engines, 9 fire crews, 5 water tenders, 2 dozers, 1 air attack and helicopter. Assisting are San Andreas Fire, Mokelumne Hill Fire, Central Fire, Foothill Fire, CHP, and the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office.

We will bring you more information as soon as it is available. Click here for a map of the evacuation and fire area.

A special thank you to Joel Metzger for taking photos of the fire.
