Peace Pole Erected In West Point
West Point, CA — To mark the five-year anniversary of 9/11 and to call attention to violence in the community, the Blue Mountain Coalition for Youth erected a peace pole at its center in West Point.
Coalition Director Catherine Lambie says the community organized the celebration to raise the level of consciousness on violence.
She says 9/11 is an important anniversary for the coalition itself because it marks five years since the center served its first meals.
The peace pole is square and made out of cedar. On each side the word peace is written in English, Arabic, Chinese and MiWuk.
The celebration was also a stopping point for the Sacred Hoop kept by an American Indian non profit group known as White Bison in Colorado. The hoop features 100 eagle feathers and has traveled across the country.
