California Lawmakers Looking To Legalize Sports Betting

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — Two California lawmakers are introducing legislation to amend the state’s Constitution to allow sports betting.

The move, by Democrats Adam Gray and Bill Dodd, comes after the US Supreme Court overturned a federal ban last year. In order to amend the Constitution, it takes a 2/3 vote of the state legislature to put the measure on the ballot, and then it must be approved by a majority of state voters. The pair is hoping to have it placed on the 2020 ballot.

The Associated Press reports that eight states have now legalized sports betting and 35 others are considering it. Assemblyman Gray and Senator Dodd argue that the related revenue generated could be spent on education, infrastructure and programs to deter problem gambling.
