Governor Appoints New Prisons Chief
Sacramento, CA — Governor Jerry Brown has appointed a new head to the state’s prison system.
Scott Kernan, the current undersecretary of operations for CDCR, will replace the retiring Jeffrey Beard. Kernan’s past also includes being a one-time Warden at the Mule Creek State Prison, and the owner of a Sacramento based consulting firm.
Brown’s appointment of Kernan still requires Senate confirmation. He will be paid nearly $244,000 annually. The Governor’s Office reports that Kernan is a registered Republican.
The outgoing leader Beard had been hired out of Pennsylvania in early 2011, and he helped oversee the implementation of the AB-109 prisoner realignment. His last day on the job is Friday.
