Employers would be barred from taking out life insurance on their rank and file employees and making themselves the beneficiaries under a bill approved by the California Assembly.

Bill supporters say such policies could make employers less concerned about unsafe workplaces. Bill opponents say many employers use the payouts from such policies to help fund health care benefits for their workers.

Today´s 42-22 vote sent the bill to the state Senate.
