Garrison Hearst is apologizing for using a slur and saying he wouldn´t want a gay player as a teammate with the San Francisco 49ers.
Hearst appeared visibly shaken by the controversy caused by his remarks three weeks ago to the Fresno Bee. The 49ers´ Pro Bowl running back made a short statement at the team´s training complex Friday afternoon.
Hearst says he knows discrimination is wrong. And he says he was wrong for making the comments. He apologized to the San Francisco 49ers organization, his teammates and to the city.
Hearst´s remarks stirred widespread condemnation — particularly among the San Francisco Bay area´s large gay community.
The leader of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force says Hearst´s apology was weak.
