Efforts to keep Patrick Ghilotti behind bars went all the way to the California Supreme Court.
But few people noticed when at least 13 other sexually violent predators were released.
A spokeswoman for the state Department of Mental Health says only three of the 13 other child molesters and violent rapists who left Atascadero´s program got treatment in custody. They were released by judges or juries.
The Associated Press tried to track down those 13 men. At least three are back behind bars, one is dead and five are registered in California as sex offenders. No information was found for four of them.
Of those incarcerated, one was picked up for failing to register as a sex offender. Another is behind bars for accosting two young girls.
Alan Charmatz, who prosecuted Ghilotti´s case, says if authorities cared, they´d be keeping closer track of those offenders.
