Brutal Assault At Golf Course Leads To Arrest

Sonora, CA — A Mountain Springs Golf Course employee is recovering from a severe beating that took place Monday.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff´s Department says deputies met with the victim at Sonora Regional Medical Center, where he was being treated for face and head injuries.

Reports indicate when the victim exited out a side door at the golf course; he was suddenly struck several times in the face, head, and upper body by 39-year-old Phillip Smail.

The attacker then drove away. People in the area witnessed the assault, and they were able to assist deputies in identifying Smail as the person who inflicted the damage.

According to statements, the assault stemmed from sexual advances made toward a woman known by both men.
