SCC May Expand Due To Overcrowding

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — The Sierra Conservation Center may be expanding in the near future.

Due to the prison overcrowding problem throughout the state, SCC is one of five prisons in California expected to take on more of the state´s prison population.

Kenny Calhoun with SCC says the Governor´s office is aware of the problem and is making strides to find a solution by expanding existing facilities, constructing new facilities or implementing local re-entry programs.

According to Calhoun, no expansion plans have been made; however he believes the first step will be housing inmates on the floors of two or three buildings in bunk beds and building modular units within the perimeter of the facility.

Reports indicate local government officials have been contacted by the Governor´s office to participate in informational meetings, which will take place in the next two weeks.
