San Francisco, CA — According to the Associated Press, President Bush won´t be declaring a federal disaster for California´s fragile levee system.
Instead, the president will allow the U-S Army Corps of Engineers to accept state funding. An un-named senior White House official says Bush has issued an unusual waiver allowing the U-S Army Corps of Engineers to accept state money for critical levee repairs.
Twenty-nine levees in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta need critical repairs to prevent flooding and ensure water delivery to cities and farms.
