Local Non Profit Gets Duped

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — A fake $95,000 donation has the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) facing some trying times.

PAWS is based in Galt and operates the ARK 2000 Wildlife Sanctuary in San Andreas.

Last week it received the donation and, assuming the money was in the bank, it immediately began spending it.

However, the bank called to say the check was a forgery and part of a scam.

The forgers are misrepresenting a real company in New Jersey. The scam comes when a letter is sent to the non profit asking for some of the money back, saying it received more than intended.

PAWS Founder Pat Derby said a forged check replacement fund has been set up.
