Bronze Casting Of Historical Statue Pushed Back

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — A 75-year-old sculpture will remain plaster until the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors approves having it cast in bronze.

Supervisor Steve Wilensky asked to have the vote on “The Gold Diggers of Calaveras” statue delayed a week, so he could get some answers about deterioration.

Museum staff members say the statue will continue to sustain damage and crumble unless the soft material is cast in bronze. Wilensky says he is concerned that casting the statue in bronze will destroy the original.

Museum officials made a trip to a bronze foundry today to ask if there are ways to make a casting of the statue without destroying it.
