ID Theft Initiative Will Not Be On June Ballot
Sacramento, CA — proposed initiative to tighten identify theft penalties will not be on the June 6th ballot, however supporters say it could still be on the one in November.
The initiative, proposed by State Senator Chuck Poochigian would tighten penalties for repeat identity thieves as well as those who scam the elderly or more than 500 people at a time.
The ballot proposal would also change a problem in the existing law that makes it a felony to steal a credit card, but only a misdemeanor for stealing the information on it.
It could cost $1 million to qualify the initiative for the California ballot and the deadline is June 12th.
