Tuolumne County Nursing Home Residents Diagnosed With Bacterial Infection

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Tuolumne County health officials are reporting that two elderly county residents have been diagnosed with a bacterial infection that may lead to meningitis.

The two are residents of the Casa De Viejos nursing home. Investigators are trying to determine whether the two are infected with the same strain of bacteria.

The investigation has identified 23 people who have had close contact with the two patients.

Those people have been given preventive antibiotics to prevent spread of the infection.

Health officials say anyone who experiences fever, nausea, confusion, headache, neck stiffness or a distinctive red or purple rash should see their doctor immediately.

Officials also urge parents to have their children vaccinated at the age of 11 or 12.

Officials continue to investigate the infections to prevent further impact on the community.
