San Andreas, CA — Billie Westernoff will be the first to tell you “Mother Hubbard´s cupboard is bare.”
Westernoff is the program director for the H.R.C. (Human Resources Council) Food Bank in San Andreas and she says “the need is up and the donations are down” in Calaveras County this year.
Westernoff says the Food Bank services between 750-800 families a month. Normally the agency will service approximately 22-23 families a day but two weeks ago the Food Bank serviced 42 families in a single day´s time.
In addition 650 families have received Holiday Baskets from the agency´s Santa´s Express program.
Westernoff says acceptable food donations include canned goods and any dry perishables.
Westernoff says even working families are in need due to increased monthy expenses such as gas. She adds these are families that need help year around, not just during the Holiday Season.
For additional information on food donations contact the Food Bank at (209) 754-1257. Monetary donations can be sent to the H.R.C. Food Bank, P.O. Box 919, San Andreas, CA 95249-0919.
