Sonora, CA — Pickets from Teamsters Local 70 in Oakland are on site at the Sonora Waste Management-Cal Sierra facility today.
The business representative for Local 439, which represents the local Cal Sierra drivers and mechanics, is Carey Daughters. He says Local 70 drivers and mechanics have been locked out for 10 weeks in the Bay Area, and it was their decision to set up a picket line on Camage Ave. in support of Local 439.
Daughters adds that Waste Management is only offering a three percent pay raise while asking employees to contribute additional funds to their medical coverage. Drivers are currently paid $15.50 an hour while mechanics´ hourly wage is $16.00. Management´s contract with Local 439 expired May 9th.
KVML´s call to Waste Management in the Bay Area for comment has not been returned at this hour.
