Household Hazardous Waste Can Be Dropped Off At Sonora Site This Saturday

Sonora, Ca — The first in a series of upcoming hazardous waste drop-off events will be held this weekend in Sonora.

The sites are set up by the Tuolumne County Solid Waste Division.We hold these events in an effort to get some of the more toxic items out of our landfill waste stream,” says Carol Jackson.

The Solid Waste Division partners with an outside company that separates out what can be re-used, and puts the remainder of the waste in toxic barrels that are disposed elsewhere.

The event will run from 9am-2pm this Saturda. It is free of charge.

Items that are acceptable from the garage and workshop: gasoline, thinners, contaminated oil, art supplies, wood preservatives, photo chemicals, glues and solvents, polishes, oil based and latex paints, adhesives, engine/brake parts cleaners and waxes.

Items from the house: ammonia and bleach based cleaners, oven cleaners, alkaline and rechargeable batteries, aerosol sprays, nail polish remover, fluorescent tubes, shoe polish, unwanted medication, ink jet cartridges, cell phones, televisions, computer monitors, laptops and LCD displays.

Items from the yard: pesticides, pool chemicals, fungicides, weed killers and compressed gas cylinders up to five gallons.

What NOT to bring: ammunition and explosives, biological waste, asbestos, medical waste, radioactive waste, tires, large compressed gas cylinders, non-hazardous waste, PCB containing waste.

To ensure a quick drop-off, make a reservation by calling (800) 811-2435. Similar events are scheduled for July 28, in Groveland, August 4, in Sonora, and August 25, in Sonora.
