Sponsored by:

Angels Camp, CA — Early Thursday morning Sergeant Steve Portinga was attacked while trying to arrest 28-year old Jason Stevens of Rio Vista.

The Sgt. pulled Stevens over for speeding and found he was a wanted felon. As the Sgt. attempted to put handcuffs on the suspect, Stevens attacked and a violent fight ensued. Stevens fled during the fight and was later found hiding in a basement on Bragg Street in Angels Camp.

The initial stop took place in an apartment complex parking lot on Bret Harte Street.

Stevens was arrested for assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, parole violation, possession of a hypodermic needle, possession of an illegal knife, possession of an illegal blunt weapon and possession of a modified air soft pistol.

Stevens´ passenger 21-year old Kira Stevens of Sonora was arrested for interfering with the duties of a police officer and possession of a hypodermic needle.

Angels Camp Police Chief Tony Tacheira says when Stevens was found he had an empty shoulder holster on him. There was an air soft pistol found in the car but it is unknown if there was another weapon. The chief advises residents in that area to be cautious of the possible lost weapon and warn children.

The Sgt. received an injury to his right hand and has returned to work.
