County Steps In On Mi-Wuk Road Issue
West Point, CA — Calaveras County officials have intervened in a road dispute between two Mi-Wuk Indian tribes inhabiting the same land in West Point.
The dispute centers around Bald Mountain Road, a county maintained public road, which travels through the Frank Fisher Indian Trust Land.
One group, the Calaveras County Mountain Mi-Wuk Tribe, accused the Calaveras Band of Mi-Wuk Indians, of illegally shutting down the road resulting in violence and hostility.
The Band of Mi-Wuk Indians maintains it is trying to work out a road maintenance agreement with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The county has stepped in and sent a letter to the bureau asking for a right of way for the portion that travels through the Indian land. The county says it would like jurisdiction to maintain the public health and safety for all of its residents.
