Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — A Modesto man was hospitalized after a collision in Sonora Thursday evening.

The accident occurred shortly before 6 o´clock on Stockton Rd., in front of Doc´s Texas BBQ. When officers arrived, they noticed one vehicle over the embankment and another in the eastbound lane with major damage.

The drivers were identified as 40 year old Jerry Todd Mathews of Modesto, and 79 year old Howard Glenn Roberts of Sonora.

According to the Sonora Police Department, Mathews was traveling westbound on Stockton Rd, while Roberts was attempting to turn onto the road. Mathews realized he would not be able to slow down in time, so he moved his vehicle to the center left turn lane. Roberts, however, continued to enter Stockton Rd., and the two collided. Mathews vehicle ended up rolling down the south embankment, where it eventually ended up catching on fire.

Mathews was able to escape the vehicle through the back window. He was transported to Tuolumne General Hospital, where he was treated for a broken shoulder. Roberts and his passengers refused any medical treatment.

Stockton Rd. was closed for approximately one hour, while emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire and investigate the accident.
