S.C.C. Prisoner Protest Waning

Sponsored by:

Jamestown, CA — Given the return to work of Level One inmates at Sierra Conservation Center, it would appear the Monday prisoner protest regarding the court mandated integration order is waning.

Monday the majority of Level One and Level Two inmates refused meals and failed to report to work. They are protesting a policy that is being tested at Sierra Conservation Center and Mule Creek State Prison in Ione.

Rather than bunking inmates by ethnicity, the new policy calls for incoming inmates to be placed in the first open bunk available regardless the race of the other inmate sharing the two level bunk.

Today Level One inmates returned to their normal program while the majority of Level Two inmates continued their protest. Lt. Jimmy Hurtado says the majority of those protesting are whites and hispanics.

Hurtado adds that for the time being the S.C.C. staff has initiated a “wait and see” attitude concerning the protest.
