Calaveras County To Issue Measure J Bonds

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — By a 3-2 Tuesday vote the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors decided to float a bond issue that would help finance a new jail.

In November of 2007 when Measure J passed by less than one percentage point, it was estimated that the average taxpayer burden would be $18.37 per $100,000 of assessed valuation.

According to the Stockton Record the Tuesday vote approves a possible increase to as much as $21.00 per $100,000. For a $400,000 home the tax increase would go from $73.48 to $82.00 or an increase of $8.52 per year.

The $31 million bond would be added to the $10 million that has already been guaranteed the county by the state from the AB900 Jail Funding package.

Sheriff Dennis Downum remains hopeful his county will be able to secure the balance of the $26 million that it applied for through the Corrections Standards Authority.
