El Portal Market Destroyed By Early Morning Fire
Yosemite National Park, CA — The 74 year old El Portal Market was destroyed by fire at approximately five o´clock this morning.
Firefighters from the National Park Service, DNC Parks and Resorts at Yosemite and Mariposa County responded to the fire.
The El Portal Market was built around 1934 and originally served park visitors traveling to Yosemite by rail. The market has served El Portal residents and park visitors since the mid 1930´s as both a general merchandise store and a community meeting place.
The market was operated between 1966 and March of this year by the general partnership of Vaughn, Vaughn and Carter.
The new operator was scheduled to open the market this spring when the renovation project was completed.
No cause of the fire has been determined at this time.
