Sonora, CA — Numerous Tuolumne County businesses have recently received phone calls from a scam artist who identifies himself as an officer with the Sonora PD, and asks for donations to help the “Sonora Police Department’s drug program.”
“We are not currently soliciting any type of money from the public and we highly encourage everyone not to donate money to this individual,” says Police Chief Mark Stinson. “A couple of business owners have confronted this individual and asked for his name and information, and he immediately hung up the phone.”
If anyone receives this type of phone call, they should contact a local law enforcement agency.
It is always advised that residents not give credit card information over the phone, unless the person contacts the agency or company directly, and know that they are reputable.
