Chamber Warns Of Statewide Document Filing Scam

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Local Chamber of Commerce offices across California have been notified by Secretary of State Debra Bowen about a scam that is becoming increasingly prevalent.

An operation is sending out a mailing that implies a company must pay $495 to a third party vendor in order to file a dissolution document with the Secretary of State’s Office when they go out of business.

Under the law, no business is required to go through a third party to file this type of document. The cost to file termination documents is $0 if done by mail and $15 if done in person.

Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO George Segarini says he does not know of anyone who has been scammed this way locally, and hopes that getting information out across the state will help put an end to the problem.
