Recreation Department Going Through Period Of Change

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — After September 30th the Tuolumne County Recreation Department will close its doors due to budget constraints.

Summer youth programs will conclude on July 31st and the pools will close on August 8th and 9th. Not affected by the closure are the Youth Centers in Groveland, Jamestown and Tuolumne, or the activities at Standard Park.

County leaders have been investigating ways to keep additional programs running.

“There’s been a lot of community meetings trying to figure out solutions for the budget impacts, that will take away many of our recreation programs,” says Mike Russell, Recreation Department Director. “The county is truly doing their level best to come up with solutions to provide services in the future for the kids and families in our community.”

Russell says providing activities for the county’s youth can prove to be a strong investment if it means keeping them out of trouble and not having to go through the legal system.
