Sonora Hosts Memorial Honoring Fallen Soldiers

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — A memorial depicting the names of the 4,000 U.S. troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan is on display next to the Sonora Walmart store this weekend.

“Welcome Home Heroes” was built by the First Assembly of God Church of Manteca at a cost of over $20,000.

“It’s tough to look at the names and realize how many young men and women have given their lives,” says Frank Smart, event coordinator. “It is very emotional. If you come here and don’t feel something, something’s wrong with you.”

At 10am Saturday was a ceremony featuring the color guard and a musical performance by the Word of Life Fellowship Church of Mi-Wuk Village.

The memorial is on display until 10pm Saturday and from 7am-noon Sunday.
