Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Sierra Senior Providers, the umbrella organization for Tuolumne County Meals On Wheels, is mourning the loss of 68 year old CEO Randy Hunsaker.

According to Sgt. Dave Seawell of the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department, Hunsaker was fishing Saturday in the Calaveras River Canyon below the Hogan Dam. When he failed to return home at a predetermined time, the Sheriff’s Department was notified at 9:30pm.

Hunsaker’s fishing equipment was immediately located near the river’s edge. A ground search was initiated utilizing search dogs while the Calaveras River Canyon was searched from the air using a C.H.P. helicopter. Additionally a swiftwater rescue team comprised of member of the Ebbetts Pass Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team searched the water.

Sunday the Sheriff’s Department’s Dive Team responded to the area and began searching several deep pools within the river. At approximately 6pm the Dive Team located Hunsaker’s body submerged directly downstream from where the fishing equipment had been located. No foul play is suspected. The initial report lists the cause of death as drowning.

From Sierra Senior Providers Board of Directors member Julie von Savoye, "We collectively and individually send our deepest condolences to Randy’s family, the staff of the Meals on Wheels and Senior Center programs and to the many individuals who knew Randy through his work at the Senior Center."

"We want to assure the many clients who participate in the Meals on Wheels and Senior Center congregate dining programs that our services will continue thanks to our excellent staff, volunteers and the leadership of Randy Hunsaker."
