Calaveras Sheriff Concerned Over Budget

The Calaveras County Sheriff is concerned over the depleting County budget.

Sheriff Dennis Downum, was Thursday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

“I guess what upsets me is that the County seems to be backing into this budget,” Downum said. “At the Supervisors meeting a couple of weeks ago, it was announced that employee benefits may be removed.”

Downum said that the department hasn’t been able to buy new cars or new equipment and that pattern should not continue for too much longer.

The construction of the new voter approved jail will not affected, however, hiring employees to staff the eventual jail could eventually become a major concern.
