Groveland, CA — An improvised explosive device (I.E.D.) was turned into the Groveland Fire Department Monday evening.

According to Captain Clay Hawkins of the Calaveras County Sheriff Department’s Bomb Squad after multiple digital x-rays it was determined the device contained an electrical blasting cap, electrical wiring and three to four pounds of a highly explosive material. The device itself measured approximately 26-28 inches in length and 2.5 inches in diameter.

The Bomb Squad moved the I.E.D. to a location well outside of Groveland and countercharged it. Hawkins added that the explosion left a crater in the ground three feet wide and two feet deep.

Highway 120 was closed by the C.H.P. and the Sheriff’s Office until the device was no longer a threat.

There were no injuries or damage reported.
