Sonora City Council Member Reviews 2010
Matt Hawkins has nearly completed his first half year as a Sonora City Council Member.
Hawkins was Thursday’s KMVL “Newsmaker of the Day”.
According to Hawkins, the most difficult task of the fairly new job has been looking at the budget.
“Not only is the State of California trying to rob us but when we have to consider making local budget cuts, your dealing with peoples lives, many of whom are good employees” said Hawkins.
Hawkins says that he is pleased with the job performance of the interim City Administrator Tim Miller as well as the current Mayor, Bill Canning.
Upon his arrival in July, Hawkins was unhappy but not surprised, to discover that the City “did not have a balanced budget.”
Looking ahead, Hawkins forsees “a lot of cuts being made” and would prefer that the cuts not affect the Sonora Police Department, as had happened before he arrived.
Hawkins says, “We need to make smart decisions in 2011, like taking a look at excess property that the City owns. We should consider selling some of it to help bring our reserves back up.”
“People elected me to stick to my principles and I’ll continue to do that” Hawkins concludes.
The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
