Sexual Assault Arrest In Angels Camp

Sponsored by:

Angels Camp, CA– A 30 year old man was taken into custody yesterday in Angels Camp for sexual assault on a minor he reportedly met in an internet chat room.

According to Angels Camp Police, an officer responded to the Wyndham Resorts in the Greenhorn Creek area at 8:30 pm. The suspect, 30 year old John Randall Carney of Colorado, was initially brought to the attention of the resort staff by the parents of a 13 year old girl. The parents noticed that Carney was taking interest in their daughter and brought this to the attention of the resort staff. After speaking with Carney, the staff discovered that he was not a registered guest and was asked to leave the premises. An argument ensued and the police were notified.

Carney had left the area before the police arrived, but a further investigation revealed that the man had been involved in an intimate relationship with the juvenile victim for several months. Carney reportedly met the young girl in a teenage on-line chat room initially posing as a 15 year old boy in an apparent effort to meet a young girl. After police obtained Carney’s cell phone number from the victim, the man was called and a meeting was arranged. An interview soon led to his arrest and Carney was booked on charges related to lewd acts with a minor under the age of 14 and possession of obscene media. Upon searching Carney’s vehicle, handcuffs, a lap top computer and a digital camera were also discovered.

The Angels Camp Police Department reminds parents to be vigilant in monitoring their children’s activity on the internet, in chat rooms and while using cell phones.
