“Caboose Day” in Jamestown
Jamestown, CA– Today is “Caboose Day” at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. Events like caboose rides, handcar rides, storytelling and live music will be featured to officially celebrate the recent restoration of wooden Caboose #7. Originally built in 1923 and brought to Jamestown in 1956, the caboose has appeared in many movies and TV shows including “Back to the Future III, where it was part of the dramatic train jumping scenes. Suffering from dry rot and poor remodeling in the 1980’s, Park volunteers spent four years carefully researching and replicating original materials to make the caboose available for a return to train service.
In addition to the popular caboose rides, visitors are also invited to operate the handcar on the roundhouse track from 11 am to 3 pm and well known storyteller B.Z Smith will be telling tales of hobos and cabooses under the sycamores from 1 pm to 2 pm. For more information call (209) 984-3953.
