Sonora, CA — The Tuolumne County election results from the June 8th primary have now been certified.

In the Sonora City Council race, the final margin between second place Hank Russell and third place Jim Garaventa was two votes.

“I’m glad it’s over and I appreciate the opportunity to serve another term,” says Russell. “I really appreciate the people that cast those last two votes.”

Russell says a main reason he sought another term was to continue to serve on the governing board for the Tuolumne County Economic Development Authority, adding that economic development needs to be a top priority for the city and county.

Matt Hawkins was the top vote getter and will fill the other seat that was up for election.
Garaventa has a five day period to request a recount. If the results change during a recount, he would not be forced to cover the costs. If the results do not change, he would be charged.

Garaventa could not be reached for comment this morning.

The final count is Hawkins 537, Russell 426, Garaventa 424 and Gary Anderson 420.
