Tuolumne County Picks New Public Defender

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — After meeting in closed session, the Tuolumne County Supervisors announced the selection of a top candidate to replace the retiring Public Defender, Robert Price.

There were eight qualified candidates identified and interviewed for the job by a panel. Four were selected to move on to an interview with the board of supervisors. Of those, two dropped out, bringing the finalist list to two.

Attorney Scott Gross was approved with a 4-0 vote (Supervisor Ryan Campbell was absent). CAO Tracie Riggs says Gross had twice the experience of the other finalist and showed a very strong passion for serving his clients.

He has previously worked with a public defender group in Calaveras County. Gross is the husband of County Counsel Sarah Carrillo.

Gross has verbally accepted the position and his contract will now be negotiated ahead of his start date, which will likely be around July 1st.
