Lottery Scam Warning For Calaveras Residents
San Andreas, CA– The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to be cautious of lottery phone scams.
A local resident recently received a phone call informing her that she had won the New York State Lottery. The caller had personal information on the victim and requested to meet her in person to receive the cash.
The Sheriff’s Office says the goal of the scammer is to get a person to reveal their bank account information, home address, or to make them do something that will result in unwanted charges on personal accounts.
A good rule is to never believe claims of a guaranteed prize. Legitimate lotteries make no guarantee of winning. Also a person should never have to pay fees of any kind to claim a legitimate state lottery payout.
Authorities say new lottery phone scams are always emerging. Report suspicious winning notifications to a State lottery office, Attorney General, or local law enforcement agency.
