Cleaning Up The Rivers

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Nearly 2,000 volunteers collected approximately 36,000 pounds of trash, appliances, tires and other debris during the third annual Great Sierra River Cleanup Saturday.

The event is sponsored by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, and supported by various agencies and non-profit organizations across the state. Several members of the State Legislature served as honorary co-chairs for the event, including District One Senator Ted Gaines who represents Calaveras County. The Great Sierra River Cleanup took place at 100 sites, including virtually ever watershed in the Sierra.

The cleanup event began in 2009 in conjunction with the annual California Coastal Cleanup event. Combined, the two events make up the largest annual one-day volunteer event in California.
