Central Sierra Arts Council Moves
Despite recently moving, the Central Sierra Arts Council continues to be a staple of Tuolumne County with numerous programs and activities planned throughout the Winter.
B.Z. Smith, Central Sierra Arts Council (CSAC) Board Member was Wednesday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.
The new digs are located at 193 South Washington Street, at the intersection of Stockton Road and Washington Street (across from Bank of America).
Smith says the new facility will allow for musical events, presentations, workshops, seminars and other special events.
The George Post Gallery will soon be moving to the new location as well.
According to Smith, in 1976 California’s State Legislature created the California Arts Council because they acknowledged that everyone’s life is enriched by the arts.
CSAC became a 501c3 nonprofit in 1978 and in its nearly 40 years of existence, CSAC claims to have never secured consistent local government funding, even though their charge is to be the county government’s designated Tuolumne public agency for the arts and to strengthen the local economy through the arts.
Despite the lack of stable funding, CSAC has worked diligently, with community support, to remain a local force promoting a variety of arts throughout the Motherlode.
According to Smith, one of the strongest ongoing CSAC programs is “ARTS Reach to Schools”. Now in its 20th year, ARTS Reach serves over 2,000 children in grades K-12 each year, and employs numerous local artists, hosts an annual student art show, presents an annual concert with The Symphony of the Sierra, and brings strong advocacy for local arts education programs. The California Arts Council views CSAC’s ARTS Reach to Schools as a model program for rural communities.
One activity tonight will be the Poetry Out Loud Final Competition at Summerville High and Connections Academy beginning at 6:30 in the school’s auditorium. Admission to this event is free. Eleven students will present poetry recitation performances.
Sonora High and Tioga High will also be holding their Poetry Out Loud Final Competition soon, all leading to a County Final at Stage 3 Theatre.
