Kuntz Concerned About Burglaries

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz is growing more concerned about the number burglaries reported in the county.

Kuntz says the county is on pace to have 597 burglaries this year, and there were only around 300 last year. Kuntz says even his own residence in the Wallace area was broken into earlier this month. Kuntz says the responsible party was apparently looking for open windows, and found one in a bathroom. Taken from his home was approximately $10,000 worth of personal items.

Kuntz has been citing the rise in burglaries during recent county budget talks, and is asking the Board of Supervisors to restore funding for five deputies that were cut from the payroll last budget cycle. Kuntz notes that 19 positions have been eliminated from his department since the economic downturn started around 2007. Currently the department has around 20 deputies and two full-time detectives.

Kuntz says the Supervisors have decided to delay a decision about restoring more deputies until August or September.
