Sonora, CA — The unemployment rate in the Mother Lode is going up, but it is falling at the state level.

New statistics released today by the State of California for the month of January show that Tuolumne County’s rate was 13.2 percent, compared to 12.8 percent in December. Calaveras County’s rate increased to 14.4 percent, as opposed to 14.1 percent the month prior.

California’s unemployment rate dropped to 10.9 percent, which marks the first time since 2009 that it has fallen below 11 percent. In December the rate was 11.2 percent. Statewide, six categories added jobs during January. They include mining and logging, construction, manufacturing, trade, transportation and professional services. Five categories reported a decrease in jobs, including information, financial services, education, health and government.

The statistics were compiled by the California Employment Development Department.
