Sonora, CA – A Summerville High School Honor student gave it her all at the California Arts Council’s State Poetry Out Loud Finals. Junior Teresa Woods traveled to Sacramento this past weekend to represent Tuolumne County in the finals. She competed against 32 other high school students from all over the state. Each student was hoping to be The Golden State’s Champion, and advance to The National Poetry Out Loud Contest.

Woods made it to the top-tier of the competition and qualified for round three of the state contest. In that final round, she read “The Room” by Conrad Aiken to the judges. Local Poetry Out Loud Coach Rick Foster says “We’re very proud of her performance. She honored our community with her compelling performances.” Central Sierra Arts Council produces the Poetry Out Loud event locally which includes nearly 500 high school and home school students.

In the end, the winner was Arwa Awan, a Senior at Pacific Grove High School in Monterey County. Awan will represent California in the national contest in Washington, DC, on April 28th to 30th, 2013.
