San Jose Man Killed In Tuolumne County ATV Crash

Sonora, CA — The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred near the Niagara Creek Campground in the Stanislaus National Forest.

The tragic event happened shortly after 11am on Saturday on Forest Road 6N19Y. An unidentified 39-year-old San Jose man was driving a 2018 Can-Am ATV when he began sliding, lost control, and the vehicle’s left rear hit a tree. The CHP reports the ATV overturned and the man was fatally injured. A passenger, 41-year-old Shawna Stephenson of Discovery Bay, was not injured. The driver and Stephenson were both using proper safety equipment at the time of the crash. The vehicle was traveling at approximately 30 mph. More specific details are still under investigation.

Niagara Creek Campground is located off Highway 108 near Eagle Meadow Road in the Summit Ranger District. It is approximately 17 miles east of Pinecrest.
