CHP Cautions Motorists As Stormy Weather Blows Across Region

Sponsored by:

Tuolumne, CA – Those heading to the high country through the Mother Lode will be met with a mixed bag of rain and snow for the weekend and that has the CHP offering winter driving tips for drivers.

The CHP says that one key is to check highway conditions and roadway closures before getting on the roadways. Winter driving conditions, including snow, ice and rain, can be dangerous. The CHP provides these safety tips:

  • Slow Down: Reduce your speed and give yourself extra time to react. Wet roads can increase stopping distances.
  • Do not use cruise control
  • Beware of black ice
  • Clean snow off vehicles
  • Pack snacks, water and snow chains
  • Increase Following Distance: Keep a safe distance from the car ahead. A good rule of thumb is to double your usual following distance.
  • Turn on Your Headlights: Make sure your headlights are on to increase visibility, even during the day.
  • Check Your Tires: Properly inflated tires with good tread can help you maintain traction on slick roads.
  • Avoid Sudden Movements: Brake and turn gently to prevent skidding. If you start to hydroplane, ease off the gas and steer straight until you regain control.
  • Be careful on bridges
