99 Cents Only Is Closing All Stores Including Sonora

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Citing challenges in the retail environment, all 371 of the 99 Cents Only stores are closing.

The Southern California-based company has locations throughout the state, along with Arizona, Nevada, and Texas.

Locally, there is a store on Mono Way in the Sonora Plaza Shopping Center. There are also seven stores in the nearby Central Valley, including communities like Stockton, Modesto, Turlock, and Merced.

Interim CEO Mike Simoncic says, “This was an extremely difficult decision and is not the outcome we expected or hoped to achieve.”

Simoncic continues, “Unfortunately, the last several years have presented significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment, including the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting consumer demand, persistent inflationary pressures, and other macroeconomic headwinds, all of which have greatly hindered the company’s ability to operate. We deeply appreciate the dedicated employees, customers, partners, and communities who have collectively supported 99 Cents Only Stores for decades.”

The company has hired an outside group to liquidate all merchandise and dispose of furnishings and equipment at the stores. The liquidation process is anticipated to begin later today (April 5).
