Mokelumne Fire Up To 540 Acres: 50% Containment

Alpine County, CA — Firefighters are gaining containment on a fire burning in the Mokelumne Wilderness in the Stanislaus National Forest.

The Mokelumne Fire was ignited by lightning on August 18. It is being managed for ecological benefit. The Forest Service had been estimating that full containment would come on October 15, but the estimate is now pushed up to September 20th due to recent progress. The fire is currently 50% contained. There are 37 firefighters assigned and two helicopters. Cooperating agencies include the El Dorado National Forest, Great Basin Unified APCD, Alpine County Sheriff’s Office and PG&E.

The Forest Service reports there is currently moderate fire behavior and minimal smoke production. There are no evacuations or campground closures resulting from the fire.
