Calaveras Sings! Theatre Arts Repertory for Kids (CSTARS) presents Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s”Mary Poppins” this weekend at the Bret Harte High School Center for the Performing Arts.

Director Ann Mazzaferro, was Thursday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

CTARS is a non-profit youth arts program serving students ages five thorugh eighteen in Calaveras County, CA.

The mission is to provide theatre workshops and performance opportunities for the youth. In doing so, they hope to teach a life-long love and respect for the performing arts.

One of the most popular Disney movies of all time will be capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect stage based musical. Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins” has delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. CSTARS Kids is proud to bring this timeless story to the Mother Lode as their 15th production.

The play takes place in 1910 England, where the audience meets the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.”

With 62 talented actors, ages 5-18, this family-friendly musical includes new songs and old favorites, and is sure to capture the hearts and imaginations of theatregoers of all ages. This is a full theater production and according to Mazzaferro, this is not your average school play.

Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins” is presented through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International.

There are four performances this weekend only including Friday, August 5, 7:00 pm, Saturday, August 6, 2:00 pm & 7:00 pm and Sunday, August 7, 2:00 pm.
