Sacramento, CA — Despite efforts to crackdown, illegal drug use among state prison inmates appears to be on the rise.
The Associated Press reports that a legislative analysis finds that positive drug tests are up…even following a multi-million dollar program implemented in 2014 to curb illegal use. The effort included utilizing machinery and drug sniffing dogs. Detected drug use has increased from 5.5% before the program started to 7.3% of inmates tested during the first year of the project.
Drug overdose deaths at California prisons are happening at nearly five times the national rate. The reason for the continued increase in illegal drug use is unclear.
